Let Go Let God illustration

My One Word – Letting Go – Suicide?

Welcome to my thoughts. I am pretty open and honest about what I am going through.

This year, 2023, I have received a phrase for my annual ONE WORD focus, Let Go.

I have written a lot about my issues with suicidal thoughts.

I am dealing with some health issues.

  • I am five years clean from Kidney Cancer – so that’s good.
  • My HbA1c has dropped to better numbers. Technically, DM2 is in remission – so that’s good.
  • I’m getting injections in my back for a disk that is compromised – so that’s good.
  • I’m losing weight – a comorbidity to many diseases – so I’m moving forward
  • I have cirrhosis – non repairable – leads to a transplant if progresses before I’m 70
      • this is NOT good – and is a terminal condition.
    • My liver scores are lower, by half, than ever in decades – this should be good.
    • I was disappointed to see that. The life changes I’ve done have slowed down the degenerative nature of the cirrhosis.

Did you see what I said? I was disappointed to see that things were improving.

I had the same feeling when I heard that the second cyst in my other kidney was not changing – no evidence of that one turning cancerous like the first one did.

WHY AM I DISAPPOINTED THAT MY HEALTH ISSUES ARE IMPROVING?

BECAUSE I WILL LIVE LONGER.

I’ve talked about suicide. Here’s one of my posts that talk about the cycle and of passive suicide.  This one was written January 2009.  I committed suicide, was found non responsive and was brought back to life by Emergency medical people on November 18, 2009.

Now to today.  When I found out that my liver disease was going to kill me, I was relieved.  You see, as my faith is, I cannot commit suicide without eternal negative ramifications.  I hold in my mind two disagreeing positions.  I cannot commit suicide, but the ones that I know who have committed suicide, I believe that God is a merciful God and will see their struggles and grant them access to the Kingdom of God. But I cannot allow that belief to be true for me, or I will again choose to kill myself.

Since 2015, because of a two month program with La Amistad in Winter Park, Florida, I have looked forward to living.  I would say I don’t want to die.  I would try to do things that were alive and living and helping others.  I was trying to have a purpose for my life, and I believed I had one.

Until the other day.  When the realization of the liver numbers hit me, and I was thinking why am I sad about that, I was shocked.  That means that my life may well be extended. That means that I really need a purpose, goals, steps and plans for the future.  I may be here longer than age 70. Damn it.

But wait!  I was saying I wanted to live – was that a lie?  No – I wanted to live the life I had left with vim and vigor.  And I was content that it wasn’t going to be long – my liver was going to finish me off.  I was comforted by the fact that my body was going to cut my life short.  I would not be responsible for that.

I actually started looking back at the last 6 months and wondered what I had been doing that might have had this change in my liver!

  • food?
    • no – going back to the 6 months ago labwork, I had been on my trip, eating fast food, processed food, and drinking a lot of diet pop.
  • exercise?
    • no – going back to the 6 months labs,  I was travelling – in a truck.  I walked the dog 3 times a day.  Not far.
  • coffee?
    • yes, the doctor told me to drink coffee, but I like it cold so I didn’t drink coffee on the trip, but I drank diet caffein pop, several canfulls.
    • when I went through drive throughs I bought the largest diet cola they had, with lite ice.  easily 64 ounces a day – often more.

I have no idea what I did to create these great blood lab numbers! And I wanted to reverse what I was doing.  Here’s the rub:

  • food?
    • I moved out of my trailer into an apartment, which has hit my budget so that I can’t eat out so much.
    • In addition, I’ve started making my own food – for budget sake and for liver sake
  • exercise?
    • I’m walking the dog 2-3 times a day, and often we go to the dog park area in our community and I play soccer with her – me kicking the ball, doing leg raises to try to get the ball from her, jumping around playing keep away.
    • I’m doing some basic exercises daily in front of the TV to mitigate pain
  • coffee?
    • well now – I’ve gotten a bit addicted to cold brew coffee, and drinking it for the morning – at least 3 cups.
    • I was given a small coffee drip maker and I’m making my own coffee for putting over ice.

The only thing I can do is to stop the coffee – and it really is helping me in other ways. I’ve even continued taking NSAIDS because of pain, and they are not affecting the numbers.  So, I’m cursed to remain on these paths towards better health.  Better Health means longer life.  I am disappointed.

I could be all spiritual about this and say that it’s because I want to go and be with Jesus, which is true, but this is not the spirit behind this disappointment.  I recognize this spirit.  It’s the same one, cleaned up and wrapped up differently, than the one that wanted me to die – to leave this world, and all it’s struggles, despair and disappointment.  This is the Suicide Spirit – just passive.

Passive Suicide.

I’ll be writing more about this, because I have history with several types of passive suicide. I just didn’t know that I was still being ruled by one.
LET GO
Who would have thought that letting God would mean that I needed to search my heart deep and Let Go of a sneaky, stealthy enemy lurking deep in my heart, secretly rejoicing in the probability of my demise.

I didn’t think it was there.
Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Proverbs 20:5 (HCSB)

Counsel in a man’s heart is deep water; but a man of understanding draws it out.

1 Corinthians 2:11a (BSB)

11 For who among men knows the thoughts[a] of a man except the spirit of the man that is in him?

I went through a very overt struggle over December with desires to not live, to not wake up, to not go another minute.  My doctor, my therapist and the pharmacist, as well as leaders of my groups helped me through those days.  But I was very aware of those urges, because of anniversaries and triggering memories.

  • No one knows about this deep dark desire to die early, by whatever means my body would give me.
  • No one knows how I’ve thought about DNR
  • and about end of time maintenance, comfort care in hospice.
  • No one knows how disappointed I am in this turn towards health.

This is silent
This is passive
This is suicidal ideation, as a core thought process.

LET GO
I have known suicide at least as far back as when I was 16, and then it was as real to me that I talked to a psychiatrist that let me know that all 16 year olds had thoughts of killing themselves. I have since talked to friends and asked them, do they think of dying, by their own hand or by disease? NO! is the answer – a resounding NO! And those that have disease look to death as a release, but not a desire. And they have to do the mental hoop jumping to get themselves in a positive mindset that if death is the end result they will leave peacefully, having gotten their affairs in order. This peace, this resolve to face their destiny is not what I’m talking about with me.

Deep down, I want to die. I don’t want to do this anymore.
I’m tired of the fights.
I’m tired of the push.
I’m tired of the abuse.
I’m tired of the effort it takes to walk out into the world and try to be a smiling, joyful person – even though that is basically what I am in public. Am I a fake? No, most of me is joyful, not wanting to burden anyone with sadness, but rather bless them with a smile. I love to do that. That is who I am.

But so is this.
And I have to Let Go.
I don’t know what will happen if I let go.
The saying Let Go and Let God come flooding in at this moment.

We are made in God’s image – triune. Body, Mind and Spirit. But, while God the Father seems to be the reigning part of the Godhead – our bodies tend to be our reigning aspect. Our minds can also get so bogged down with negative things that it can be the reigning aspect. And if there is trauma, messing up the healthy connection between mind and body, things can get twisted. Cognitive Distortions come along. The healthy mental pathways don’t get laid down properly. The basic animal instinct of survival of the fittest is overwritten with thoughts that I am not the fittest, that I don’t belong, that I am a detriment to the others that need to survive.  These can lead to depression, which can lead to suicidal ideations.

I am giving up this mentality because it is a door that keeps the good things of the Lord from flooding in.  It keeps me from truly feeling the joy that comes from living my life for Jesus Christ.  It makes it difficult to practice self care – because I don’t deserve it, or it might extend my life – this life I want nothing to do with.

BUT GOD!  I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe the promises in Christ are yes and amen.

  • 2 Cornithians 1:20 (NIV)
    • For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
  • Jeremiah 29:11 Berean Standard Bible
    • 11For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.
  • And with the promise in Jeremiah comes some extra blessings from God (Jer 29:12-13)
    •  12Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. 1
  • Deuteronomy talks about choices after being set free from captivity – which I have been to suicide. (Deut 30:11-20 NLT)
    • 15 “Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. 16 For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy.

I have to make a choice.  A deep down in my heart choice.  To root out this deadly thought process so that it cannot jump up and grab me again, messing with my mind and setting in motion things that will be detrimental to my living the life that God has prepared for me.

woman at sunset with arms outstretchedI will LET GO of the desire to die.

I will LET GOD fill me with HIS light and life, to wash out all darkness.

I am grateful to God that He chose to expose this to me so that I could repent and turn back to Him.

Wisdom and Praise Readings
Psalms 6, 36, 66, 96, 126, Proverbs 6

We’re still in David’s Prayer Journal and he’s asking for forgiveness.  It’s a great illustration of how to come before the Lord when we have messed up.

There are several songs that I’m going to share with you from several of these Psalms.  Learning scripture songs helps me to memorize scripture, as well as they seem to come back to me in times of need.

Of course Proverbs has some great wisdom for us on how to successfully live our life.

Let’s dig in!

  • Psalms 6 – Prayer for forgiveness
    • Psalm 6:1-3 Pleading with God
      • Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger;
        do not discipline me in Your wrath.
        Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am weak;[a]
        heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking;
    • PS 6:4-5 declaration of what he wants with a little negotiation.
      • Turn, Lord! Rescue me;
        save me because of Your faithful love.
        For there is no remembrance of You in death;
        who can thank You in Sheol?
    • Ps 6:6-7 The conviction and Repentance declared
      •  am weary from my groaning;
        with my tears I dampen my pillow[b]
        and drench my bed every night.
      • this could also be a prayer for deliverance – when times are so tough that we cry out by crying
    • Ps 6:8 setting boundaries
      • Depart from me, all evildoers,
        for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
    • Ps 6:9 declaration of faith
      • The Lord has heard my plea for help;
        the Lord accepts my prayer.
  • Psalm 36 – a song from my youth
    • Ps 36:1-4 definition of a wicked man
      • An oracle within my heart
        concerning the transgression of the wicked person:
        There is no dread of God before his eyes,
        for in his own eyes he flatters himself too much
        to discover and hate his sin.
        The words of his mouth are malicious and deceptive;
        he has stopped acting wisely and doing good.
        Even on his bed he makes malicious plans.
        He sets himself on a path that is not good
        and does not reject evil.
    • Psalm 36:5-9
      •  5Thy lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
                    Thy faithfulness reaches to the skies.

             6Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God;
                    Thy judgments are like a great deep.
                    O LORD, Thou preservest man and beast.

             7How precious is Thy lovingkindness, O God!
                    And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Thy wings.

             8They drink their fill of the abundance of Thy house;
                    And Thou dost give them to drink of the river of Thy delights.

             9For with Thee is the fountain of life;
                    In Thy light we see light.

      • The Ps 36 Song by Don Moen!
    • Psalm 66 – Praise to God for Deliverance!
      • Ps 66:1-4

          Sing about the glory of His name;
          make His praise glorious.
      • Ps 66:5-9 recounts the Exodus deliverance
      • Ps 66:10-12 refinement
        • 12 For You, God, tested us;
          You refined us as silver is refined.
        • Psalm 12:6 (KJV)
          • The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
        • 1 Peter 1:7 (WBT)
          • That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though tried with fire, might be found to praise, and honor, and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
      • Ps 66:13 – 15 – declaration of fellowship
        • 13 I will enter Your house with burnt offerings;

      • Psalm 66:16-20  Sharing what God has done.

  • Psalm 96 – another Song!  This is the Jewish song book!
    • Ps 96:1-6
      • Sing a new song to the Lord;
        sing to the Lord, all the earth.
        Sing to Yahweh, praise His name;

        8[c]Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
        Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
        9Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
        Tremble before Him, all the earth.
    • Ps 96:11-13  Nature sings His Praise
      • Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
        let the sea and all that fills it resound.

        Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy
  • Psalm 126 – Praise for Restoration
    • Ps 126:3 Go To Verse

        we were joyful.

God speaks on Adultery a lot.  There’s so much that gets damaged when married couples are unfaithful.

We are the Bride of Christ – He is the Bridegroom.  We are betrothed to Him.

Revelation 19:7

Let us be glad, rejoice, and give Him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has prepared herself

.

As Christ’s bride, we are to prepare ourselves. Ephesian 5:25-27

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her with the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.

Even if we don’t have a husband we are not free and clear of preparing ourselves. Now – here’s my point.

  • What does all the warnings about adulterous situations have to do with those of us and our relationship with God?
    • If we put anything between us and God that is idolatry, right?
    • If we put someone else between us and our partner, that’s adultery, right?
    • If Jesus is our husband, and we put something between us and Him – it’s SPRITUAL ADULTERY
  • GOD HATES ADULTERY AS MUCH AS IDOLATRY!
    • When we put something as more important than God in our lives, GOD is the wounded partner.
      • It breaks His heart.

So even if you have no intention of being unfaithful to you partner – check yourself about things that have become more important than God in your life, and repent.

Wisdom and Praise Reading
Psalm 5, 35, 65, 95, 125 and Proverbs 5

Today, there is a lot about praying, and settling your mind, or setting your heart for the attitude of the day.  There is continued praying. Many of these are David’s prayer journal entries.  We can learn about heart attitudes from them, and take verses to strengthen our hearts in times of trial, depression and despair, as well as how to find joy in every situation and detail of life.

  •  Psalm 5 – Again, Crying out to God to be heard
    • Day 2, Day 3, Day 4
    • Psalm 5:1-2 Cry out
      • Listen to my words, Lord;
        consider my sighing.
        Pay attention to the sound of my cry,
        my King and my God,
        for I pray to You.
    • Psalm 5:3 Confession of faith
      • At daybreak, Lord, You hear my voice;
        at daybreak I plead my case to You and watch expectantly.
    • Psalm 5:4-6 listing things that come between us and God
    • Psalm 5:7 declaring that we can enter in
      • But I enter Your house
        by the abundance of Your faithful love;
        I bow down toward Your holy temple
        in reverential awe of You.
    • Psalm 5 continues with a request to be led in righteousness
    • Psalm 5:11-12 declaration of faith
      • But let all who take refuge in You rejoice;
        let them shout for joy forever.
        May You shelter them,
        and may those who love Your name boast about You.
        12 For You, Lord, bless the righteous one;
        You surround him with favor like a shield.
  • Psalm 35 – A longer Psalm, again, from David’s Prayer Journal
    • Psalm 35: 1-8 Prayers for deliverance and a defender
      • 1 – Oppose my opponents, Lord;
        fight those who fight me.
    • Psalm 35: 9-10 Declaring victory
      • Then I will rejoice in the Lord;
        I will delight in His deliverance.
        10 My very bones will say,
        Lord, who is like You,
        rescuing the poor from one too strong for him,
        the poor or the needy from one who robs him?”
    • Psalm 35:13-14 an attitude towards our enemies
      • Prayer –
      • when prayer is not answered, go to fasting
      • FOR OUR ENEMIES – do we do this for our family and friends?
    • Psalm 35:18 – a “go to” verse to declare in times of trouble
      • I will praise You in the great congregation;
        I will exalt You among many people.
    • Psalm 35:28 – a “go to” verse to declare to the Lord
      • And my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness,
        Your praise all day long.
    • Psalm 65 – sort of follows the Our Father –
      • Matthew 6:9 -13 (RSV)
        •  Pray then like this:

          Our Father who art in heaven,
          Hallowed be thy name.
          10 Thy kingdom come,
          Thy will be done,
              On earth as it is in heaven.
          11 Give us this day our daily bread;[a]
          12 And forgive us our debts,
              As we also have forgiven our debtors;
          13 And lead us not into temptation,
              But deliver us from evil.[b]

        • Psalm 65: 1 – Our Father who art in Heaven
          • Praise is rightfully Yours,[a]
            God, in Zion;
            vows to You will be fulfilled.
        • Psalm 65:2 Thy Kingdom come thy will be done on earth
          • All humanity will come to You,
            the One who hears prayer.
        • Psalm 65:3 forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
          • Iniquities overwhelm me;
            only You can atone for[b] our rebellions.
        • Psalm 65:4 Give us this day our daily bread & thy Kingdom come on earth
          • How happy is the one You choose
            and bring near to live in Your courts!
            We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
            the holiness of Your temple.[c]
        • Psalm 65 5-13 is a declaration of the Creator God
    • Psalm 95 the first 7 verses are a song that I have sung, but I cannot find the music.  So I will share several that I have found:
      • Psalm 95:8-11  God pleading to man to come to Him
        • Hebrews 3:13
          • But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
        • Romans 2:5
          • But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
    • Psalm 125 – a song
      • Ps 125:1-2 a Song, I sing on the video above. Here are other optios
      • Psalm 125:4-5 a Prayer
        • Do what is good, Lord, to the good,

          to those whose hearts are upright.
          But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
          the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.

          Peace be with Israel.

Proverbs 5 – counsel to avoid the wicked woman – or to avoid being with an adulteress, and to avoid being unfaithful.  It describes the suffering that happens when one is loose with their sexual self.

There are many things in today’s readings. Some “go to” verses. Some songs. Prayers. Declarations of Faith. And then, counsel to keep yourself pure, and faithful. I hope that this has tweaked or tickled your mind on these readings and that you have found something from today to take with you, for now and forever.

2023 First 100 days – day 4 Reading Wisdom and Praise

2023 First 100 days – Wisdom and Praise day 4

(first 100 days day 4)

Ps 4, 34, 64, 94, 124 and Proverbs 4

Today’s readings in Psalms have similarities. They all deal with crying out in distress, asking for help and answered prayer, and they end with a beautiful declaration.

Proverbs continues to give us counsel on how to be wise.

  • Psalm 4 – a cry in distress with a declaration of faith
    • 1 Answer me when I call,
      God, who vindicates me.[a]
      You freed me from affliction;
      be gracious to me and hear my prayer.
    • 7 You have put more joy in my heart
      than they have when their grain and new wine abound.
      I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
      for You alone, Lord, make me live in safety.
  • Psalm 34 – Response to Psalm 4
    • 4 I sought the Lord, and He answered me
      and delivered me from all my fears.
  • Psalm 34 – many “go to” verses to hide in our heart
    • 1-2 I[b] will praise the Lord at all times;
      His praise will always be on my lips.
      I will boast in the Lord;
      the humble will hear and be glad.
    • 7 The Angel of the Lord encamps
      around those who fear Him, and rescues them.
    • 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good.
      How happy is the man who takes refuge in Him!
    • 13-14 Keep your tongue from evil
      and your lips from deceitful speech.
      14 Turn away from evil and do what is good;
      seek peace and pursue it.
    • hope when in despair – The Lord is near the brokenhearted;
      He saves those crushed in spirit.
  • Psalm 64  – a longer version of Ps 4
    • 1 God, hear my voice when I complain.
      Protect my life from the terror of the enemy.
    • 10 The righteous one rejoices in the Lord
      and takes refuge in Him;
      all those who are upright in heart
      will offer praise.
  • Psalm 94 – God is a just God
    • fair is that every gets equally, just is that it’s based on legal requirements
    • God is a judge, and He judges good and evil based on His laws.
    • mercy is that we are not dealt with according to our transgressions, no punishment is applied.
    • grace is that we are able to come before a Holy God and make the requests and out cries of Psalm 4, and Psalm 64 or any other out cry in distress, because if we were judged according to our transgressions, we would not be able to stand before a Holy God.
    • Psalm 94 training
      • 12 Lord, happy is the man You discipline
        and teach from Your law
        13 to give him relief from troubled times
        until a pit is dug for the wicked.
    • Psalm 94 my defender
      • 16 Who stands up for me against the wicked?
        Who takes a stand for me against evildoers?
    • Psalm 94 My protector from suicide
      • 17 If the Lord had not been my helper,
        I would soon rest in the silence of death.
        18 If I say, “My foot is slipping,”
        Your faithful love will support me, Lord.
        19 When I am filled with cares,
        Your comfort brings me joy.
  • Psalm 124 – declaration of Deliverance
    • 6 Praise the Lord,
      who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.
      We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
      the net is torn, and we have escaped.
      Our help is in the name of Yahweh,
      the Maker of heaven and earth.
  • Proverbs 4 – Still talking about listening and learning to be wise.
    • Pr 4 – the beauty of wisdom
      • 5 Get wisdom, get understanding;
        don’t forget or turn away from the words of my mouth.
        Don’t abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you;
        love her, and she will guard you.
        Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.
        And whatever else you get, get understanding.
        Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
        if you embrace her, she will honor you.
        She will place a garland of grace on your head;
        she will give you a crown of beauty.”
    • Pr 4 two paths of which to choose
      • 18 The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
        shining brighter and brighter until midday.
        19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;
        they don’t know what makes them stumble.
    • Pr 4 the most important point
      • 23 Guard your heart above all else,[a]
        for it is the source of life.

 There are  many “go to” verses to memorize in today’s readings.  What I mean by a “go to” verse is something that touches my heart and is important for me to remember in times of trouble, stress, depression, suicidal thoughts, pain and many more.

Another reason is Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

The cries for deliverance in these psalms also point out the need to be in a right relationship with the God of the universe through His son Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us.

Is there something from today’s readings that you would like to memorize?  Let me know.  If you have trouble with memorizing, ask me for help.  I have several methods I’ve used over the years.  The most successful one, though is having the verses put to music and singing it all day long.

Psalm 63:7  NIV

Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.

Hi! My hope in the midst of despair and my joy in the face of depression is because of my relationship with Jesus Christ. If you do not have one, or are not sure you will join him in heaven, please check out these links.

2023 First 100 days – day 2 Wisdom and Praise Reading

2023 First 100 days – day 2, January 2

Hey, January is going to be easy to label the day of the year for the first 100 days.

One of the things that I am trying to do to keep me accountable and to have others join me is a live video each day at The WildBerry Patch facebook page.
We are doing 5 psalms and 1 proverb each day for a month. Trying to build a habit.

I’m also trying to write something for each of the firsts 100 days.

Here’s Day 1.

Today was Psalm 2, 32, 62, 92, 122 and Prov 2.

As I read Psalm 2, it’s all about the angst of the enemies of God against Him. Isn’t that a foreshadowing or an analogy of our hearts raging against God when we have sinned against him?

With that thought in my head, I went on to Psalm 32.

How joyful is the one
whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered!
How joyful is the man
the Lord does not charge with sin
and in whose spirit is no deceit!

I realized that this Psalm provides the steps to forgiveness:

  1. Realizing the blessings of forgiveness
    1. Psalm 32:1-2
      1. above
  2. The discomfort of unforgiveness
    1. Psalm 32:3-4
      1. 3.When I kept silent, my bones became brittle
        from my groaning all day long.
        For day and night Your hand was heavy on me;
        my strength was drained[a]
        as in the summer’s heat.Selah
  3. The need for confession
    1. Psalm 32:5
      1. Then I acknowledged my sin to You
        and did not conceal my iniquity.
        I said,
        “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
        and You took away the guilt of my sin.Selah
  4. The need to pray
    1. Psalm 32:6
      1. Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to You
        at a time that You may be found.[b]
        When great floodwaters come,
        they will not reach him.
  5. The need to abide
    1. Psalm 32:7
      1. You are my hiding place;
        You protect me from trouble.
        You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.Selah
  6. God promises counsel
    1. Psalm 32:8
      1. I will instruct you and show you the way to go;
        with My eye on you, I will give counsel.
  7. Confession of faith
    1. Psalm 32:10
      1. Many pains come to the wicked,
        but the one who trusts in the Lord
        will have faithful love surrounding him.
  8. Rejoicing in the Lord
    1. Psalm 32:11
      1. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice,
        you righteous ones;
        shout for joy,
        all you upright in heart.

This was a blessing to me today. Asking God to forgive us is letting go of the sinful actions, thoughts or desires. Admitting that you are in need of forgiveness is giving up your own path and choosing to walk on the path that God has chosen for you.

Itty Bitty Bible Study – Titus 2a

My thoughts for the Itty Bitty Bible Study group on Facebook. (join if you’d like to get these in fb!)

For Chapter One, I utilized a video series from Right Now media. You can get that information from one of the previous studies.

Itty Bitty Bible Study Titus 1:6-9

Titus chapter two, follows Titus chapter one. I know, that’s pretty simple. When the letter was written, there were no chapters and verses. Those were added later to assist us in some way. For more information, check out Wikipedia about why there are chapters and verses!

Why do I bring that up?
Because, Titus 2:1 starts with “but”

Titus 2:1 King James Version (KJV)
2 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

But what?
It refers back to the preceeding passages in Titus 1:9-16.
Titus 1:9-16 King James Version (KJV)
Specifically, talking to the wise old men:

9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

and those that are not wise old men:

14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

IBBS Titus 1:10-16 talks about the not so wise old men.
IBBS Titus 1:6-9 talks about the qualifications of elders, or those that choose to be a light to the world – those of us who are called to be ambassadors!

Let’s put Titus 1:9, 16 with Titus 2:1

1: 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he(wise believers) hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
1:16 They(the gainsayers) profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
2:1 But speak thou(wise believers) the things which become sound doctrine:
italics mine

Now, onto chapter 2.

Titus 2 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Sound Teaching and Christian Living
2:1 But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching.
2 Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance.
3 In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God’s message will not be slandered.

6 In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled 7 in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity[a] in your teaching. 8 Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.

9 Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back 10 or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything.

11 For the grace of God has appeared with salvation[b] for all people, 12 instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works.

15 Say these things, and encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard[c] you.

Let’s Dig In!

Titus 2.1 But Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine.

What’s the point of sound doctrine?
We are ambassadors to the word of God. Our lives should reflect our relationship with Jesus Christ, and our words should reflect our understanding of the doctrine of salvation.

I have an Itty Bitty Bible Study Post, Titus 1:6-9 about being an ambassador.

The Bible seems to support the concept of “adulting”.

OLD MEN…AGED

Titus 2:2 Aged man. There are other verses that mention about aged men. The point is that as we age we are supposed to become more responsible. Apparently, unlike the animals grow from infant to young adult to being self managing adults in the wild, human beings need to be taught how to be a respectable, responsible adult.

Titus 2:2 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
2 Older men are to be
level headed,
worthy of respect,
sensible, and
sound in faith,
love, and
endurance.

Mentoring – some verses that point to the expectation!

And another!

OLD WOMEN – AGED

Titus 2:3-4 Likewise, teach the older women
to be reverent in the way they live,
not to be slanderers
or addicted to much wine,
but to teach what is good.
Then they can urge the younger women
to love their husbands and children,
Titus 2:3‭-‬4 NIV

I find it interesting that the main responsibility for aged women, aside from character is to teach what is good. Now in this verse it doesn’t say only teach women, or only teach children, but I’m just pointing that out. The other primary goal for an aged woman is to urge younger women to love their husbands and their children.?

I’m going to share a little bit of my own thoughts about an aged woman urging others to love their husbands.

My husband and I have been married since 1980. We have 5 children.

We married when we were 19 and 20. We were a young man and a young woman. The keyword is young!

To say that we did not understand each other or how to communicate would be an understatement. We did go through premarital counseling through 2 different churches. That’s supposed to be the guarantee that you are of like mind enough to at least start out the marriage peacefully right?

Along comes the honeymoon.
Jim had no idea how long it would take for me to get dressed and ready to go out to a fine dinner. This was one of our 1st clashes. And James defense, is 1 of 3 boys with a mom who’s only Preparation for a fine dinner is to put on some lipstick. She also never really went in for dressing nice except for one wedding, but even then I’m pretty sure her outfit was very simply put on, her hair dried naturally perfect, and of course the lipstick . Jim had no idea that it might take someone an hour to get ready to go somewhere! And his experience with me as we were dating was I was always ready on time or 10 minutes early. We just needed to recognize each other’s expectations.
At some intersections, as we were driving since we took a road trip for honeymoon, I would sometimes make a comment as to which way to turn not knowing that this was a very sensitive issue for Jim. To him it was me telling him what to do. To me I was just being part of the conversation. We needed to learn a bit more about each other and trigger points or hot buttons.

There issues we didn’t know about each other, like, I have PTSD which has some interesting effects on trust, intimacy, and sensitivity. Then one I can think of that Jim had a problem with was anger and I’m not sure he ever knew he had a problem until he met the irritating, aggravating, Illogical aspects of me.

I was pregnant from summer of 81 to May of 88, and we have gotten to realize in our old age just how much those hormones mess with the personality and common sense of the woman who is pregnant. I would say things that would irritate Jim and I could not figure out why. But thanks to some experience with others who have been pregnant who have said things that have hurt me, I now understand that I was hard to live with!

Add into that 5 children between ‘82 and ‘88, which also included 2 miscarriages, I was either pregnant, nursing or recovering from pregnancy for those 6 years. We did the night time feeding issues, the babies that screamed all night issues, the diapers, sicknesses, and protecting them from themselves issues constantly for 6 years. If I actually want to be correct, it would be 7 years to include our youngest’s whole 1st year. At the end of that year, in April or May of 89, I had a complete hysterectomy throwing more of my hormones completely out the window.

I’m not gonna continue on about the different hormones and when my memories came back from the abuse as a child or anything else because I’ve laid out the story well enough to give you an idea of the stress were in . Oh, of course, money was tight so I needed to grow our own food as much as possible and stretch the penny as hard as it would stretch.

Here’s where I’m going with this.
There are several types of counseling that I got it this time.

There were those that recommended I leave Jim and divorce him because of his anger. But they did not take into consideration my issues and I was aware enough of my issues that I knew it was not an imbalanced issue that caused friction in our marriage. And, in my mind set, I was pretty sure that anything that was going wrong in our marriage was all my fault. I was trying to find ways to just stay married but there were those that felt that I needed to leave him now. I guess it was my own self opinion that kept me from doing this.

There were those that said that I should just be silent and not say anything to Jim and only reply “yes sir” “no sir” to anything that he had to say.

I was also told that if there is any trouble in a marriage it is the woman’s fault.

I was also given counseling on the appropriate method of submission to my husband, and to only speak positive things and to never groan or complain in front of anyone. This one was the closest to right, in that this one kept his perceived character flaws out of the public eye and encouraged me to love from My love of Christ, and the love Christ to placed to my heart. But this backfired. In fact when I tried to talk to an older woman from church, just ask for counsel about how to interact with Jim, she looked at me in the face and said “I thought you said your husband was perfect! So, the problem must be you!”

After separations, hours and hours and hours of counseling, and some high intensity conversations, this older woman(me) has come up with a couple things that would have really helped me when we began. I haven’t yet written up some of the latest but here are 2 that I have shared in the last few years:

This one is to aid communication
Marriage Tools 1

This one helps get your heart focus in the right place:
Marriage Tools 2

This other post just summarizes everything I’ve said and points to love.

I was given a way for me to visually express my desire to love my husband: But I only have it on Shutterfly.

But I gave Jim all sorts of tangible evidences of me loving him and I photographed them and put them in a book because we were moving into a trailer and didn’t want all the clutter of the physical items.

These are ways that I, as an old woman, am trying to teach younger women. to love their husbands without being shackled, without being belittled or talked down to.

1st Timothy 2:9 through 15 talks about women.
After I first got married, I did a deep study in The Bible about what a woman should be, including Proverbs 31.
I have no idea where that study is, but I wanted to find out how to be a godly wife and eventually how to be a godly mother.

I find it interesting that the things older women are supposed to teach the younger women are

  • to be sober,
  • love their husbands,
  • love their children,
  • to be discreet,
  • chaste,
  • keepers at home,
  • good,
  • obedient to their own husbands and that the word of God not be blasphemed.

The reason you need to teach something to someone is because it doesn’t come naturally.
Today, some of these words have very negative meanings.
Someday I may go through and discuss how they are not so negative, but today is not That Day.

YOUNG MEN
Titus 2 verse 6,7,8

  • Sober minded,
  • pattern of good works,
  • doctrine is sound,
  • they can’t be condemned by their speech and
  • enemies have nothing evil to say that could be believed.

While this is listed for young men to be taught, I’m thinking that young women could be taught to have a pattern of good works, to have uncorrupt doctrine, to be sincere, and that their speech is such that they can never be questioned as well.

The speech thing reminds me of the verse about the prophet whose words never fell to the ground.
1 Samuel 3:19

What a lovely thought! What a glorious thing to be said about someone! If one were to do a topical study in the Bible about the importance of the tongue, it would be intense!  Off the top of my head I’m thinking about the verse life-and-death is in the power of the tongue.
Proverbs 18:21

SLAVES – SERVANTS – EMPLOYEES

Titus 2:9-10
Obedience.
Young women are told to obey their own husbands, and servants are told to

  • obey their own masters.
  • Please them well in all things
  • Answer not again

There are cultural aspects to this, but there is also truth.
There are positions of authority in the Kingdom of God.
Jesus was under the authority of God the Father while he walked the earth, and He said so. And yet, Jesus is fully God. Both God the Father and God the Son highly honor God the Holy Spirit.

If we look at the Godhead, the triune nature of God, and we remember that in Genesis we were created in the likeness of God we can get a hint as to what this obedience means.

A difficulty in the world today that causes us problems with this is the CEO’s of large corporations making so much money when the ones lowest on the totem pole have to have food stamps to make ends meet. Employees and employer issues. Monarchs and paupers.

Many monarchies in history were completely out of touch and many still maybe out of touch with the plight of the common man. King and subjects

Let’s look at this again:

One of the concepts of obedience in the Christian faith is similar to obedience of a child to their father. A child’s father should love and care for the child while honoring their own personality and allowing them to explore things within a safely constructed environment.

Adam-and-Eve in the garden is a great example. They were given this beautiful garden and could do whatever they want and eat whatever they wanted except for one tree.

The Bible says that Jesus learned wisdom and obedience by the sufferings that he went through as a child, which was probably the training of Joseph and Mary as his parents.

Adam-and-Eve decided to eat of the one and only tree out of only God knows how many and disobey.
One day, Jesus didn’t stay with the family but stayed back at the temple discussing things with the priests and scribes. Obviously that was outside of the boundaries his parents had given.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Jesus sinned, I’m saying that his parents had to bring him back into the boundaries of the environment with which they were protecting him.

Adam-and-Eve did sin, because they went directly against what God had said, and then they were kicked out of the beautiful environment that was the garden, and now we all suffer the consequences.

When a child is told not to touch the hot burner on the stove, and they reach up and touch the hot burner, most parents allow the burn to be the punishment.
a wise teaches that to disobey what has been laid down can bring negative consequences.

The husband is supposed to provide the protection and the wisdom to have a godly household, a safe household, in order for the wife to excel in the giftings that God has given her to provide a peaceful household and a nourishing household.
Can a man run a household? Yes. But men don’t normally have the nurturing gifting that a woman has.
Can a woman provide for a household? Yes. But a woman isn’t naturally the detached overseer.
And then there’s the whole thing about children, they just don’t have the knowledge or the experience. They need to trust their parents to provide them with safe boundaries so that they can explore and have a safe place to process that exploration. When the parents do not provide this guidance, that’s when we have many different and difficult issues with our children.

In our world today we have many men raising families on their own and many women raising families on their own and children that are tossed around because their parents have not become responsible for them. This was not God’s plan

Just like any corporation, someone needs to be in charge to make decisions. Someone needs to advocate for the workers and create a space conducive for growth. And you need workers.

A corporation without a head will flounder because it can’t move forward. Without the human resources personnel to stand in the gap between their CEO and the workers, many abuses end up happening. Unless the business is a one person creativity business, it needs the workers to get the work done.

Obedience isn’t about blind submission and eliminating self identity. The biblical concept of obedience is that it is an act of love, respect, and honor out of gratitude for what God has done in our lives. It is also like the son who wants to be like his father or the daughter who plays imitating her mother.
And obedience is a choice.

Someday I’ll write something about submission and obedience. They are so misused to abuse others. There are many other scriptures that talk about the responsibility of those in positions of authority to humble themselves and care for those that are under their authority as their own flesh.
The church is supposed to submit one to another and to consider others more highly than themselves.

If we take The Bible as a whole, we cannot read it the way it has been used and abused for many years.

Moses was described as a friend of God, there are several times that we have it in writing that he answered God as in answering again or questioned God! If the verse saying not to answer again to our employers for our masters as a has been applied, then Moses was out of line.

David knew he wasn’t supposed to mess around with another man’s wife, no one needed to tell him about it, and he messed around with Bathsheba.
When the Lord told him that the child would die, he cried out for God to change his mind. That seems like answering again!

Elijah argued with God about what God sent him to eat.

Peter argued with God about what God showed him to eat.

So again, we can see that there’s something different here.

Then there is something about being called be the leader of the family.
When Zachariah was told by the angel that Elizabeth would have a child, he argued and was struck “dumb”

And yet when Mary was told she was gonna have a baby without having known a man, she actually questioned the angel and wasn’t struck dumb.

That tells me there’s a right way to question authority and a wrong way.

All of that was to say I’m never going to preach obedience as an aspect of salvation or submission equaling that of of doormat that can be stomped all over without any individuality and mental acuity on behalf of the woman.

The next section of chapter 2 is really the why and I think it needs its own discussion. Please join me!

My One Word 2019 – Guard Your Heart 4/22-24

Proverbs 4:23 English Standard Version (ESV)
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.

Guard your heart.
Wow.
As I was working through the additional Lent blogs, of which, I only added a handful, I was struck how many times that someone wasn’t guarding their heart.

Judas – he wasn’t guarding his heart. He was known to be a liar, and thief.
Peter – he wasn’t guarding his heart when he denied Christ 3 times before the cock crowed.
Martha – she wasn’t guarding her heart when she said to Jesus “Master – go straighten out Mary!”
Jonah wasn’t guarding his heart when he was sent to Nineveh – I did a whole study on Jonah in Itty Bitty Bible Study!
Abraham – he wasn’t guarding his heart when Sarah suggested Hagar to carry their child.
Miriam and Aaron weren’t guarding their hearts when they spoke against Moses.
Job – he wasn’t guarding his heart when he was depressed. Somewhere in there, God was stirred up in a whirlwind, and spoke to Job, and he repented!
David – he wasn’t guarding his heart when he called Bathsheba to the palace.
on and on and on and on throughout scripture we can see that humanity is as it has done since the day Eve didn’t guard her heart and had a talk with the devil, and since Adam didn’t stand up for what God had told him, and he followed along with Eve. First peer pressure!

My current situation – here is the prayer I’ve been sending around:

Prayer warriors…a request..for the week of April 21, 2019
Nutshell…travel Sunday, Thursday and Sunday,and Monday.
Procedures Tuesday and Friday.
Next week Jim has two procedures. We have much travel. We would like you to agree with us in prayer:
Our Travels would be blessed and all protected, all pilots will be rested, and alert.
Machinery, both for travel and for surgery, will perform at top standards or higher.
Doctors and medical staff will be alert, clear headed, well rested and not ill.
Jim and i would have the peace that passes understanding as we abide in Jesus, our prince of peace.
I would walk in manifestation of health, i say no to vertigo, migraines, any dizziness or ear pain. I say that Jesus took those stripes so that i am healed!
I declare life to Jim’s body, in Jesus’s name.
I confess that cancer must leave, in Jesus’s name.
I speak peace and confidence because of our position with God the father, because of the blood of Jesus Christ.
I pray that through this challenge, our love for each other, and our love for Jehovah God will grow exponentially.

Thank you all for your prayers. I’m going to tag a few of you… share a you see fit.

I am confessing God’s promises.

Passover.
Friday, April 19, 2019 was the first night of Passover.
The thing about Passover is that Moses told the people to sacrifice a lamb, and to put the blood on the doorposts to warn the death angel that this home was covered by the blood price God demanded for sin.

Death and disease came into this world because of sin.

I’m not saying that Jim or I or anyone else has cancer because of THEIR sin – but that this world has fallen so far from the Paradise that God intended, and our bodies were not made to excel in this environment. It’s why they lived longer and longer as you go back closer and closer to the Creation.

Then the flood – because of sin.
Then, man couldn’t live as long anymore.
And, they didn’t have fast food and coffee places on every corner!

This is a fallen world.
You and I are fallen humans.
Our bodies are no longer as strong as they once were. From the day we are born, our bodies go about dying.
I could delve into the whole genetics and how we are losing our genetic resilience (Jim could add the pod case about folks getting dumber) but, I want to get back to the Bible.

Jim has death in his body called cancer.
Jim gave his life to Jesus Christ – 1975.
Jim’s sins were covered by the blood of Jesus the day he invited Jesus into his heart.
Jim’s healing was purchased by the stripes on Jesus’ back.
Jesus said on the cross – IT IS FINISHED.

BECAUSE JIM HAS THE BLOOD OF JESUS ON HIS SOUL, THE DEATH ANGEL, OR DEVIL, HAS TO PASS OVER BECAUSE HE IS A CHILD OF GOD!

What happened next to the Israelite/Hebrews? They were set free from the slavery of Egypt.

I believe that cancer is a type of Egypt – something that sucks the life out of you, and beats you down.
I believe that Jesus came to deliver us from our Egypts. Yes, that means sin and the punishment for that sin. But we also have the promise that by his stripes we WERE healed!

I’m going to back down a little bit…do you always see the manifestation of your healing in this lifetime? obviously, no.
Do I know why? Sometimes, in my life, I do.
Other times, I don’t.
Other times, I get really upset that I do not see the answer.

This is when I need to guard my heart.

What do I believe? Here’s a simple answer:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Apostles Creed

I also believe that the Bible is the word of God, add verse about all scripture….

It says that I can ask what I will and it shall be given unto me, if I ask in Jesus’ name.

In our life, we have seen children raised from the dead(possibly me…), broken bones healed, sicknesses removed and many other things. We have also seen certain physical issues NOT get taken away, or removed.
do we give up?

this is where I have to guard my heart….it says that he that endures to the end….

Does it mean the Bible isn’t true?
This is where I have to guard my heart…it’s an act of faith.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Faith is a choice.
Love is a choice.
believing that My Father God, who has given me so many good gifts, is a bad God because of the few things that I haven’t gotten, or the sickness or disabilities he has chosen not to heal (on my timeline) is to not love God, to not have faith in God, and to not be patient with God.

I am believing for the Passover of Jim’s bodily struggle from this fallen world.
I am believing for Jim to be brought out with silver, and with gold, and not be feeble ever again…
I am believing that we will both enter into the promise land, by faith in the person of Jesus Christ.

guard my heart – for out of it flow the wellsprings of life….

Psalm 19:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

Proverbs 18:21 King James Version (KJV)
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

James 3 says a lot about the dangers of the tongue.

Deuteronomy 30:15-20(NIV) – specifically:
19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Today, I choose life!

Joshua 24:14-15 King James Version (KJV)
14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

As for me and my house – we will serve the Lord!

We place the blood of Jesus upon the doorposts of our heart.
We declare the protection of the Angel of the Lord.
We command, in Jesus’ name, the death angel to pass over our home and family!

Today is day three of our medical week.
first flight – excellent.
first procedure – accomplished well, and Jim is in little pain.
Tomorrow is the flight out of the country.
Friday is the big procedure for Jim.
Saturday is a recovery day.
Sunday is a flight back to the states.
Monday is a flight from Orlando to Pittsburgh and back home.

Time for praising!

I’m doing some editing from Cancun, Mexico, as Jim is in the operating room for HIFU.

Therefore, this is actually day five of our medical week.

I’m sitting outside of the hospital cafeteria, listening to the birds and construction.  I am at Peace!

The WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE.
Tuesday, we looked at THE WAY.
Wednesday, we looked at the TRUTH.
Today, we will look at THE LIFE.

Pastor John Piper has a great sermon about the Life God gives us.

Here is his Easter sermon from 1984, talking about God giving you life in your mortal bodies.

EKG Cross heart beat heartI want to look at Jesus IS THE LIFE.

From BlueLetter Bible, the Outline of the Biblical Usage of this word is this:

  • life
  • the state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animate
  • every living soul
  • life
  • of the absolute fulness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God, and through him both to the hypostatic “logos” and to Christ in whom the “logos” put on human nature
  • life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.

Websters has these choices:
1a : the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body
c : an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism (see METABOLISM sense 1), growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction
4 : spiritual existence transcending (see TRANSCEND sense 1c) physical death
5a : the period from birth to death

There are 20 entries!
My summary:
Life is being able for growth, reaction to stimuli and reproduction in a human.
Life is a spiritual transcendance of a human and the very nature of God
This is my favorite definition:

life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.

To discuss how Jesus is LIFE, we need to find out where death came from!
Genesis 1

Genesis 1 King James Version (KJV)
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Before God created man, He created, period!

  1. Light
  2. Firmament of Heaven divided from Earth
  3. Dry land separated from water, plants – first evidence of life
  4. Sun, Moon, Stars – Day and Night
  5. Water Creatures
  6. Land creatures and Man

There are various creation theologies.
Back to John Pipers ministry, they provide Creation Theology in 12 points.
Here is a very deep explanation of Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 from Answers in Genesis.
The theological term is creatio ex nihilo, the Latin for “from nothing”.

This is the theological position I believe.
and here’s a few verses to back my belief up, though others will have verses that back up their theology.

Hebrews 11:3 King James Version (KJV)
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

John 1:3 King James Version (KJV)
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Why do I believe this?
1. In the Beginning – God.
Out of His creative character, and because only HE can create matter(First Law of Thermodynamics and the Law of Conservation of Mass Energy) God Created.
Nothing was made without him is the rephrasing of without him was not anything made that was made.
2. God is eternal, therefore, within Him resides ETERNAL life. Ps 90 All About God – Eternal God.
3.All beings with a spirit are Eternal or Immortal, but only God is without beginning or end. Daniel 12:2-3, All About God’s writing about is the Human soul mortal or immortal?
4. The order of Creation sets up the stage for LIFE on earth!
5. Man was not alive until God breathed life into him. Genesis 2:7
6. In the midst of the Garden there was a tree of life.
7. In the midst of the Garden there was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:9

What happened? SIN
I’ve written about Adam and Eve on many instances, but my favorite is An Inconvenient Truth.

Short story:
Eve listened to the Serpent
Adam listened to Eve
God found out.
animal had to be killed to pay the price so they would not have to die.
At that point, death entered the world.
Cain killing Abel was the first murder.
and it goes down hill from there…
UNTIL

Jesus is born.
Eve had been given a promise.

Genesis 2:15
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

They did not have to suffer physical death instantly as the judgement of their disobedience demanded, but something had to. A sacrificial animal. The precursor to Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb.
Here’s where you can learn more:

I am that I am – a statement of Life, complete existence in Himself – THIS IS THE FIRST NAME GOD GAVE HIMSELF.

Only HE who HAS can give to he who has not.

John 10:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Back to Genesis –

Genesis 3
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Because of the disobedience, they were driven out of Paradise.
They were forbidden to eat of the Tree of Life!
We are in the midst of a study called Freedom created by The Church of the Highlands. I highly recommend it, to get a new and fresh look at the Trees from the Garden.

To eat of the Tree of Life would have meant that they would forever live in their sin. God prevented that.

green tree with live brancesJesus is the Rod of Jesse – like a tree. Is 11:1-2
Jesus is the Branch – like a tree. Zech 6:12
Jesus is the Vine – a plant. John 15
Hebrews 11:17-24 talks about being grafted into the tree of the family of God.
Romans 6 talks about being dead to sin and alive to Christ.

When we are saved, the old man dies – the death payment for our sins, and the new man comes alive – the Life bestowed upon us for being IN CHRIST!

Acts 17:28 New International Version (NIV)
28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[a] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[b]

The interesting thing here is that Paul is talking to the people of Athens – and is quoting their own poet, who was speaking of THE UNKNOWN GOD. They knew there was some power that was in everything – and Paul declares Him as the God of Creation, who sent His son so that we could KNOW HIM!Jesus is my life with tree

Jesus broke down the walls that separated us from the Tree of Life!
In Jesus, WE HAVE LIFE!

That is worth celebrating!

objectively

  • what is true in any matter under consideration
  • truly, in truth, according to truth
  • of a truth, in reality, in fact, certainly
  • what is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth
  • in the greatest latitude
  • the true notions of God which are open to human reason without his supernatural intervention
  • the truth as taught in the Christian religion, respecting God and the execution of his purposes through Christ, and respecting the duties of man, opposing alike to the superstitions of the Gentiles and the inventions of the Jews, and the corrupt opinions and precepts of false teachers even among Christians

1. universally, what is true in any matter under consideration (opposed to what is feigned, fictitious, false):

John 1:14 & 17 says

John 1:14-17 King James Version (KJV)
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

      • Jesus says He is the Truth.
      • John describes Him as bringing Truth.
      • The Religious leaders told him that he taught the truth in Mt 22:16, Mk 12:14, and Luke 20:21.
      • Jesus tells us that

        John 8:32 King James Version (KJV)
        32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

      • Jesus says we should do truth in John 3:21
      • Jesus says we need to worship God in Spirit and in Truth in John 4:24
      • Jesus prays about us being sanctified by the truth in John 17:17

        John 17:17 King James Version (KJV)
        17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

      • Jesus says to the Father – THY word is TRUTH!

Is Truth a Who? What? How?

Thing or Action – Our Salvation

Ephesians 1:13 King James Version (KJV)
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Action – Our responsibility to obey  – Galatians 3:1 and 5:7

Thing – Part of our Armor! Loins girt about with Truth!  Eph 6:14

Person or Character – God is not a liar – therefore God is true:  – Titus 1:2, Heb 6:18 and

Numbers 23:19 King James Version (KJV)
19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

In fact, Hebrews 6:18 says that it is an immutable thing…God cannot lie! Part of His Character!

Person –  Jesus promises a comforter…the Spirit of Truth!  John 15:26,

John 14:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Person – The Spirit of Truth is our Teacher.

John 16:13 King James Version (KJV)
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Who is this comforter? The Holy Spirit, the third person in the God head! For more info on the Tri-unity of God, Lent Day 7

  • Jesus is the Truth
  • God’s Word is True.
  • Jesus is the Word.
  • We are sanctified by the Word.
  • Jesus is God
  • God cannot lie.
  • The Holy Spirit is God.
  • The Holy Spirit is Truth
  • The Holy Spirit is the comforter that Jesus sends back to teach us all things of TRUTH!

What are the “doing” parts?
Part One – teachings – The Holy Spirit is guiding us into all truth…because Jesus promised that

John 8:32 King James Version (KJV)
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Part Two – actions

So that we can gird our loins with TRUTH.
So that we will not be deceived by the enemy.
So that we will be set free from the lies that surround us.

How can this be a concept, a person, thing and an action at the same time?

  • By Faith, we Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ – TRUTH as a person.
  • God’s heart is that all will come to the knowledge of truth – 1 Tim 2:4 – TRUTH as a concept to be taught.
  • We are told to obey the truth in Galatians – TRUTH as a concept and action.
  • We are told to gird our loins with TRUTH – TRUTH as a noun

God is only known in spirit and in truth. He is OTHER. This is a whole study unto itself. The thing is, that we believe it because God said it, and we trust His Words. It is because HE is. It is by faith, through grace.

Ephesians 2:8 King James Version (KJV)
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Romans 10:9 King James Version (KJV)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

The opposite of truth is deceit.
I don’t want to list these verses, and fill up this blog, but, for further study, here is a list of scriptures about deceit from Bible Study Tools.

Colossians 3:9-10 King James Version (KJV)
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Deceit is part of the old man – the man without the resurrection power of Jesus Christ in their lives.
Remember, we are known by our fruit!

Jesus is the TRUTH – and by allowing him to enter into our lives, and make us new, set free from the old man, we are back in relationship with the God who Is TRUE, and we can be filled with the Holy Spirit of Truth, who will guide us into all truth!

In that light, we can
Psalm 37:3-6 King James Version (KJV)
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4 Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Truth is God, Godly and Godliness.

Ps 63:7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

“The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear.
If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation.
If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself.” –
