Passage
Mark Chapter Fifteen

It doesn’t matter which version you choose. It can be digital or paper. You can use one of those fancy coloring bibles and do a page or coloring along with the passage.

I will mostly do Holman Christian Standard Bible because of their copyright freedoms.

The Images that I use are from Knowing Jesus and are available as downloads in every format that I can imagine for screen savers and wallpapers.

  • Mark 15 ( Cross Referenced with Matthew 27, Luke 23 and John 18 & 19)
    • Mk 15:1- 15 Before Pilate and the crowd

    • Pilate – ARE YOU THE KING OF THE JEWS?
    • Jesus – You have said it.
    • Accusations

    • Pilate – WHY?
    •  Mk 15:14 But they shouted, “Crucify Him!” all the more.
    • Mk 1515 Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged,[b] he handed Him over to be crucified.

More discussion about these stories in Mindfully Meditating on Matthew Chapter 27

A good place to see the four gospels compared is from Synoptic Gospel Parallels.

Mindful Meditating

  1. choose a verse,
  2.  set a timer for 5 minutes, or whatever works for you.
  3.  example: Mark 15:39
  4. repeat to yourself, and at each word, enunciate the next word in the sentence starting with the first word…

example:

  • Mk 1539 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He[o] breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[p]
  • THIS man really was God’s Son!
  • This MAN really was God’s Son!
  • This man REALLY was God’s Son!
  • This man really WAS God’s Son!

and so on.  This will cause you to look at the verse more intently, and may have you memorize it before your five minutes are done.

Advent 2015 – day 6 – Why did Jesus Come?

Advent Day 6.
Light the 6th candle.

Why did Jesus come?
Because, He had to.
Out of the loving heart of God, Jesus came to earth to pay the price for my sin.

Romans 3:23
All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Anyone that is honest can agree that they have not walked perfectly in accordance with the laws and commands that God put forth. We’ve fallen short of the GLORY of God – and we can’t even conceive of that Glory!(Romans 3:10-24)

Romans 6:23a
The wages of sin is death…

This is what was set in motion when Adam and Eve sinned – sin came into the world, separating us from God. At that point, humans started to slowly die. If that wasn’t bad enough, God separated us from the tree of life – so that we would not choose evil AND eternal life. That was part of the consequence of our sin, separation from paradise and God. Therefore, they were dead in their sins, and going about dying. The same with us – and it is a struggle I have every day. I want to choose life – and yet, I often choose my own wisdom or knowledge, and end up messing up – and I am separated from the close fellowship with God through Christ. That fellowship is life! Without it, I am dead.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love for us(me), For while we(I) was yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The price to pay for sin is death. It’s a death sentence. Either I die for the sins, or a sacrificial lamb, perfect and holy, dies in my place. There is much talk among Christians about ‘death to self’.

  • My flesh hungers – for foods that are not good for me.
  • My mind hungers – for stimulation that does not propel me towards my God given goals.
  • My emotions hunger – for having my needs met over others.

I must crucify the flesh – but the only way I’m able to do that is by taking part in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I can’t do it on my own.

Because of Christ dying for us:

Romans 6:23b
…the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23b

By Jesus dying on a tree, He opened the door back up for us to participate in the fellowship with God, and gives us eternal life. When we cross over, we will see the tree of life. I have seen the gardens of Heaven, they are beyond imagination. It was not my time, so I did not see the tree of life. based upon what I saw, I can declare that this tree will be beautiful in ways that no tree on earth can express.

While the crucifixion of my own flesh is hard, receiving the gift of God is simple.

Romans 10:9 & 13

9 That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart
that God has raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved.

13 For whoever calls on the name of the LORD
shall be saved.”

I believe that Jesus is my Savior.
I believe that I am a sinner saved by Grace.
Daily, I need to confess my beliefs, not for the devil, but for me to remember.

another great song is

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see.

Thank you Lord Jesus for drawing me near to your heart, and saving me out of your great mercies.
Thank you for daily giving me mercies that are new every morning.
Thank you for giving me examples of those that have fallen, and gotten up again, by your gracious hand.
This year has been hard to remember that I believe.

But I do believe. And that not of myself, lest I boast – that is a gift from you, God.(Ephesians 2:8-10)
As I spend this month remembering, I am thankful most for this gift of faith, that has given me eternal life.

The ornament for this day is a cross, a savior.

Building a Lenten Cross

Christi and I started our plans for the Lenten Cross thinking that we would use some pallet boards that we had in the garage.  They are thin, rustic and about 5″ across.

Pallet boards

I knew we would have to do layers to get enough thickness.  After looking at the boards, I decided they were too brittle and twisted; we wouldn’t be able to get them into a solid sandwich.

A visit to Lowe’s ensued.  My original thought here was to use untreated fence boards.  Alas, all they had were treated ones.  I knew these would not take stain in a way that would achieve the rugged look we wanted.  As I was wandering around, I found a 2x6x8 rough sawn cedar board.  Perfect!

The cedar board was a solid 2”x5 1/2” which didn’t look quite right with our original plan.

Since I had plenty we made a first try on the following plan

The first layout

The general plan was to

  • Rip the board to 4 1/2” (this seemed to fit the votive holders about right)
  • Make the cross bar from 3, 4 1/2” squares (13 1/2” total)
  • Make the vertical from 5, 4 1/2” squares (22 1/2” total)
  • I dado’ed the pieces (a bit too deeply) so they would fit together

In the end, this did not look quite balanced.  The cross piece seemed stubby and the top pieces (above the cross piece) was too short.

Comparing perspective.

After some puzzling, we decided to add 1” to each end of the cross piece and 1” to the piece above the cross piece.  This made the cross piece 4 1/2” x 15 1/2” and the upright 4 1/2” by 24 1/2”.  The top of the cross piece was left at 4 1/2”.  I cut new pieces and redid the dado (this time getting it the right depth.)

In the following videos, I grooved the board with a circular saw, then cleaned the dado with a router and a stiff putty knife (bought chisels later).  It was a matter of using the tools I had.  A ‘better’ way would be to use the table saw with a dado head, or I could have done it all with chisels.  The best tool is the one you already have that will get the job done.

Once the dado’s were cut, I put some wood glue in the dado, and used 4 deck screws from the back side.  I was careful to keep the screws towards the outside of the center so they would not interfere with the insert for the votives.

Back side of the joint (after staining).

For the votive locations we started by centering them on the beams of the cross.  Since the piece above the cross beam was still 4 1/2”, we used 4 1/2” for all the vertical and horizontal spacing.  Once the centers of the holes were marked, I used a 5/8” Forstner bit to make an initial hole 3/8” deep.  We did not need the votive inserts to be snug fitting.  I used a 2 5/8” hole saw to mark the outline of the hole for the router.  I just eyeballed the depth.  I was concerned about the router splintering the cedar or “running away” as I tried to cut the hole.  The hole saw did snag the wood a bit and left a somewhat rough edge, but this was ok with the overall look and feel.  Once all the holes were outlined, I set the depth on the router and routed out all the holes.

Hole saw on left. Forstner bit on the right.

Clamps are required to keep it from spinning. Now it was Christi’s turn for the stain.  She used a vinegar and steel wool solution to distress the wood.  This took only a few minutes to dry (winter is the dry season in Florida).  I added 4 plastic furniture skids to the bottom of the cross and it was all done!

The bleed over on the back side is just the vinegar and steel wool stain.  The back is unstained.  Christi bought the votive candles and holders on Amazon

Scripture

Luke 23:34 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
[34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.”][a] And they divided His clothes and cast lots.

Devotion
Picture this, Jesus has been beaten, pommeled, actually, nailed to a cross, and he’s dying a horrible, painful, slow tortuous death. What’s the first words out of his mouth?

“Father Forgive them, for they know not what they do!”

In my Itty Bitty Bible Study on Obadiah, I talked about the fact that God DOES judge those that do things against his chosen…even when they are messing up! Jesus hadn’t messed up.

Psalm 105:15 says that we are to not touch the Lord’s annointed.
JESUS IS GOD’S UBER ANOINTED ONE!

Christian Apologetic explains why David did not take too kindly to the Amalekite finishing off Saul!

2 Samuel 1:13-16 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?”
“I’m the son of a foreigner,” he said. “I’m an Amalekite.”
14 David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”
15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him!” The servant struck him, and he died.
16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

Saul was David’s bitter enemy! David took killing the Lord’s anointed seriously.

HOW MUCH SO THE GOD OF CREATION WOULD TAKE SERIOUSLY CREATION KILLING HIS OWN SON???
I put out there, that if Jesus had NOT asked God to forgive us, God would have wiped out the whole bunch. There are examples where God did just this! Elijah, Noah, and others. God’s enemies even killed themselves. Jesus was praying for mercy upon those that were playing their part in His death, burial and resurrection.

He was also giving us an amazing lesson in forgiveness!(1 Peter 2:20-23)

Love your enemies

Matthew 5:44-45 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
44 But I tell you, love your enemies[a] and pray for those who[b] persecute you, 45 so that you may be[c] sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Bless them

Luke 6:27-28 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (also Romans 12:14)

Forgive them!

Matthew 6:12 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

The Lord’s prayer…it is a double edged sword….

Matthew 6:14-15 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
14 “For if you forgive people their wrongdoing,[a] your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. 15 But if you don’t forgive people,[b] your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.[c]

Luke gets a bit more specific:

Luke 6:37 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)Do Not Judge
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Jesus expalined it even moreso with the parable of the unforgiving servant.

Matthew 18:21-35

When Jesus said “Father Forgive them” – He asked for mercy upon all of those of us that were his enemy at that time.
He loved us, while we were yet sinners – enemies of God! (Romans 5:6-8)
He blessed us with redemption – while we were enemies to God!
He Forgave us!
Jesus prevented another flood, like in Noah’s day, by transferring his right to revenge into forgiveness!
To Be Like Jesus is to Forgive, Love and Bless, even our enemies.

Do you need to confess your sins? I do!
Psalm 51

Last year, I was confronted with How Long Bitter! I just re-read that. It fits here as well!

And, WHY did Jesus go to the cross? ME! YOU! – Our sins sent him to the cross. He declares us forgiven! Let’s NEVER forget that!

Lenten Candle Cross ideas, instructions

I had the idea to create a Lenten Cross, based on my Advent Log from my Advent Devotionals.

Christmas on the Advent Log

It starts with darkness, then each candle leads up to the Light that comes into the World on Christmas Morning.

In the reverse, the Lenten Cross starts with the Light that was in the world, and goes slowly dark, towards Good Friday, when Jesus hung on the cross.

First, I designed it – based on 4.5 inch boards.  There were various upgrades along the way.

My husband cut the boards (multiple times, because of his patience with me) and drilled the candle votive spaces. I did a vinegar/steelwool wash to distress the wood.

I did a little bit of research on burial herbs and oils, and came up with cedarwood and balsam wood – and Yankee Candle has a very nice smelling votive! Cinnamon could also be used.

I wanted to keep the candles separate from the board, and I found a company that makes votive glass on Amazon. You can find whatever you like! You just need to make sure that the spots are cut to the correct dimension!

I realize that not everyone has a handy husband, or their own woodworking skill or tools, so, here is another idea. Buy some votive candles – these are ones I have around the house – and place them in a cross shape.

Here are two other ideas for votive holders, from canning jars you can purchase many places, but there are large selections at craft stores!

These are the blue 8oz mason jars. I purchased these at Walmart.

These are 4 ounce – I think I found these at World Market, though I think I’ve seen them at Hobby Lobby.

Other thoughts I’ve had…red candles for the hands and feet.
I have some heart shaped, battery powered, red, led lights from Valentines day – I may wrap them around the cross for Good Friday.

Whatever you choose to do – do what helps you, and your family, reflect on the last days of Jesus’s life here on earth, and why He went to the cross for us!

Thanks for joining me in this journey,
