Psalms 20, 50, 80, 110, 140 and Proverb 20

Today’s readings have a couple of prayers, a song I sing, God describing Himself, and Proverbs insights into life.  We touch on the Lord’s second coming.

In addition, it has a beautiful Messianic Psalm that is used to herald in Christ as the King.

  • Psalm 20 Prayer and Proclamation
    • Ps 20:1-5 Prayer for others, great outline for prayer time.
      • May Yahweh answer you in a day of trouble;
        may the name of Jacob’s God protect you.
        2 May He send you help from the sanctuary
        and sustain you from Zion.
        3 May He remember all your offerings
        and accept your burnt offering.Selah
      • May He give you what your heart desires
        and fulfill your whole purpose.
        5 Let us shout for joy at your victory
        and lift the banner in the name of our God.
        May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.

  • Psalm 50 – God Speaks
    • Ps 50:1, 5, 7
      • Yahweh, the God of gods[a] speaks;
        He summons the earth from east to west.[b]
      • “Gather My faithful ones to Me,
        those who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”
      • “Listen, My people, and I will speak;
        I will testify against you, Israel.
        I am God, your God.
    • Psalm 50:2 God’s beauty
      • From Zion, the perfection of beauty,
        God appears in radiance.[c]
      • Psalm 48:1-2
        • The Lord is great and highly praised
          in the city of our God.
          His holy mountain, 2 rising splendidly,
          is the joy of the whole earth.
          Mount Zion on the slopes of the north
          is the city of the great King.

        • Listen, Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned on the cherubim, rise up

      • The heavens proclaim His righteousness,

        • “What are all your sacrifices to Me?”

          “I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams
          and the fat of well-fed cattle;
          I have no desire for the blood of bulls,
          lambs, or male goats.

        and whoever orders his conduct,

    Psalm 80 Song for deliverance

    • Ps 80:1
      • Listen, Shepherd of Israel,
        who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned on the cherubim,
        rise up

    • Ps 80:3, 7, 14
      • Restore us, God;
        look on us with favor,
        and we will be saved.
      • Restore us, God of Hosts;
        look on us with favor, and we will be saved.
      • Return, God of Hosts.
        Look down from heaven and see;
        take care of this vine,
    • Ps 80:19
      • Restore us, Yahweh, the God of Hosts;
        look on us with favor, and we will be saved.

        • Jeremiah 3:22
          • Return, you faithless children. I will heal your unfaithfulness. “Here we are, coming to You, for You are the LORD our God.
  • Psalm 110 – Messianic Psalm and 2nd coming
    • Ps 110:1
    • Ps 110:3
      • Your people will volunteer on Your day of battle. In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, the dew of Your youth belongs to You.
    • Ps 110:4 
      • The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
        “Forever, You are a priest
        like Melchizedek.”

    • Ps 110:5-7 the final day
      • The Lord is at Your right hand;
        He will crush kings on the day of His anger.

        from the clutches of the wicked.

    Proverb 20

    • Pr 20:1 moderation, control
      • Wine is a mocker, beer is a brawler,
        and whoever staggers because of them is not wise.
    • Pr 20:3 Peaceful
      • It is honorable for a man to resolve a dispute,
        but any fool can get himself into a quarrel.
      • Pr 15:1
        • A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath
      • Pr 17:14
        • To start a conflict is to release a flood; stop the dispute before it breaks out.
      • Pr 26:21
        • As charcoal for embers and wood for fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.

        • He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

      • A man’s steps are determined by the Lord,
        so how can anyone understand his own way?

        • Ps 37:23 AMP  The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the LORD, And He delights in his way [and blesses his path].
        • Psalm 25:12 Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will show him the way he should choose.
        • Ps 32:8 I will instruct you and show you the way to go; with My eye on you, I will give counsel.

      • The Lord’s lamp sheds light on a person’s life,[g]
        searching the innermost parts.[h]
